Another movie hinted at in Pinocchio was this.

In 1953, Walt Disney Pictures released Peter Pan. Based on on a play of the same name, and a book called The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up by J.M Barrie. Now this was a film that I didn't grow up with unfortunately but always wanted to see. I'm not sure when I finally watched it, but I do remember loving it. Now will this film have better reception on his debut release than Alice in Wonderland, or should it just be fed to the tick-tock-croc? Lets find out.

Story
Our story begins with a narration by a narrator. Which introduces us to the Darling Family. Which consist of George, Mary, and their kids, Jane, John, and Michael. Apparently, in the Darling house, peter pan is something very familiar to the family. Jane is the on brings it up the most. She tells her brothers stories of Peter Pan, a boy who never grows up and lives in a place called Neverland. The boys like to act out the stories by playing games together. Currently they're playing a battle between Captain Hook and Peter Pan. After we get introduced to Nana, a nurse dog who prides in taking care of the kids, some funny stuff happens which leads to Jane getting a room of her own. And that would mean no more stories to tell to her brothers. Later after George and Mary leave to go to a party, the kids are visited by Peter Pan himself, along with his psychopathic, big butted, fairy sidekick, Tinkerbelle. And no, I'm not being sexist. After Peter hears the news about Wendy getting kicked out of the nursery, he teaches the kids to fly, and takes them to Neverland. Peter Pan's home. When they get to Neverland, the meet the Lost Boys, a group of kids who live with Peter and act like his sidekicks. Captain Hook, an evil pirate who wants to kill Peter for cutting off his hand and feeding it to the tic-tock-croc, a crocodile who swallowed and alarm clock who's always trying to eat the rest of captain hook. We also have some Indians and some Mermaids but they don't do too much in the story. I don't want to give away anything else since I don't want to give out spoilers. So this story is pretty fun. Peter is a cool character. Tinkerbelle, while being crazy, has her moments. Captain Hook is a cool villain, easily one of Disney's best. Yeah he is your average pirate, but he's an awesome pirate with a cool voice and a funny pirate crew.

Animation
The animation is basically the same as Alice in Wonderland, only less colorful. That's all I have to say about it.

Background Info
Like Alice in Wonderland, Walt planned this as early as 1935. The movie was originally supposed to be a sequel to Bambi. But y'know....the war. Nana, the kids dog, was supposed to come along with the kids, but that was scrapped. Not to mention there was supposed to be a much darker ending. Mainly peter was supposed to kidnap the kids, the kids parents were supposed to mourn over the loss of their children, and captain hook was supposed to get eaten by the tick-tock-croc. Kathryn Beaumont, who played Alice in Alice in Wonderland, returned to do the voice, and the live-action model of Wendy. Yes, they did the whole live-action before animation thing again. Now Tinkerbelle would go on to be one of Disney's most popular characters. She would appears in tv shows, theme parks, her won spin-off movies, and she would get a spot on the Hollywood walk of fame. Alongside other famous characters like Bugs Bunny and Godzilla. This is said to be the last film that Walt's 9 old men worked on together as directing animators. Ironically, this film did better than Alice in Wonderland on its debut release. It became Michael Jacksons favorite movie of all time, which is why he named one of his homes Neverland ranch.

Final Thoughts
Peter Pan is a great movie. Not the best in my opinion, but still good. The characters are funny and likeable, it has a great villain, and has some nice animation. Some of the songs are pretty nice, like The Elegant Captain Hook. All in all a good movie. I'm giving Peter Pan an 9/10. Truly a Disney Classic. Next time I'll be looking at Disney's first original film......wait what?

All you need is faith, trust, and pixie dust.
